Text: 1 John 1:7
“but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
Light is a source of illumination, spiritual or mental illumination (enlightenment). The beauty of light is seen when there is darkness. Whenever light is mentioned, there is darkness. So there is no need for light if there is no darkness.
The darkness we are talking about here is “sin”. Darkness is sin and sin is death. All who indulge in sin walk in darkness, and it is death. The Devil is the father of darkness.
The light is the word of God – psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet And a light unto my path.
The word is Jesus – John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
When man submitted to sin in the garden of Eden, darkness took over man and the atmosphere of man and he was meant to die. Until Jesus ( the Word) gave life which was the light of men – John 1:4, “In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
How then do we walk in the light?
To walk in the light is to align one’s life with the Word of God — that the Word becomes our life. Nothing that we do conflicts with the Word of God.
1 John 1:5-6 — “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not know the truth.
Darkness as we have said is sin. The light is Truth. It shows where there is still sin in our flesh. Our job is to love the truth: to acknowledge that there is sin in our life that needs to be cleaned out. The Word of God comes to us in the way that it should be and we choose God’s Word over our desires in times of temptation. The Word becomes life in us.
Light is judgment and when we step by step, enter into the light and are willing to be judged, we are transformed into Jesus’ image.
When we walk in the light, we seek for it to shine into every area of our life so that sin can be exposed. We become children of the light. Where the light shines, growth comes. Love, Joy, peace, kindness, long-suffering, and all the fruit of the spirit grow in the light.
Prayer: Lord, let your light shine over every darkness in my life in Jesus’ name.
